LD & Autism Training with Right at Home Solent
At Right at Home Solent, we have recently started our Learning Disability & Autism training for all our CareGivers in Fareham, Gosport, Southampton & New Forest East. The CQC (Care Quality Commission) said that it was now mandatory for all CareGivers, all over the UK, to have training in Learning Disability & Autism. At Right at Home Solent, we provide quality Homecare, to those who are Elderly, or Vulnerable Adults who require specific support needs. Although a large number of a Clients in Fareham, Gosport, Southampton & New Forest East, are Elderly, we also support people who live with Autism or Learning Disabilities.
Our Registered Manager, Amanda, started rolling out the training a couple of weeks ago, and so far, it’s been successful, with all of our CareGivers who have completed it, saying that they learnt a lot from it. At Right at Home Solent, we are passionate about providing as many training sessions as we can, for those CareGivers who want to learn new things; we are always supportive of those who want to progress in the Career in Care.
The Aims of our Learning Disability & Autism Training:
- Understand the terms autism and learning disability
- Understand the importance of meeting an individual with Learning Disabilities or Autism’s unique communication and information needs
- Understand that changes in a person’s presentation or behaviour may be a means for communicating unmet needs
- Explain a range of support techniques
- State the Legislation that covers Autism and Learning Disability in the UK
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) can be defined as: a diverse group of lifelong conditions that are characterised by some degree of difficulty with Social Interaction and Communication. Autism effects people in different ways. There are many challenges that come with supporting someone that lives with Autism; therefore, it is important that all our CareGivers in Fareham, Gosport, Southampton & New Forest East, are properly trained on how to deal with those Clients that have complex Care needs or those living with Learning Disabilities or Autism.
Common Challenges with Learning Disabilities and Autism
- Hyper Focus on Interests or Hobbies – Many of those living with Learning Disabilities or Autism may have intense or highly-focused interests that can last a lifetime or change over time. They might also attach themselves to particular objects)
- Becoming Overwhelmed – If people with Autism or Learning Disabilities become overwhelmed, they may shutdown. You may notice signs of distress before they are becoming overwhelmed, that can help avoid this.
- Anxiety – Coping with change and facing the sensory environment around social situations are often difficult for people with Learning Disabilities or Autism to process; which can further trigger Anxiety.
Communication with those with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism
It can be more effective to use a variety of different methods of communication; as this provides the person living with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism different ways to understand the communication.
